From the foot of Africa’s highest mountain, Kilimanjaro, to the lakes of the Great Rift Valley, and the route of the wildebeests’ Great Migration, this safari includes the elephants of Amboseli, birdlife on the shores of Elementaita, and the Big Cats of the Masai Mara

Overview

In a week of wildlife-watching, we visit two ‘Big Five’ reserves, where lions and leopards, elephants, rhinos and buffalos rule the roost, as we explore the untamed wilderness of three National Parks, the natural habitats of hundreds of bird types, predators and prey, and the tallest and heaviest land animals on earth, the giraffe and the African elephant. The safari starts in Amboseli. With a backdrop of majestic Mount Kilimanjaro, indigenous Masai communities, and resident mammals ranging from large herds of elephants to little dik-dik antelopes, the park is an all-round experience of Kenya’s culture and creatures.

Lake Elementaita is UNESCO listed to preserve its 400 species of birds, including cormorants, kingfishers, pelicans, and Pallid harriers, and flamingos feeding in the shallows of the soda lake, which often turns pink with the algae that attracts them; while at Lake Nakuru National Park, fifty mammal species thrive in its varied landscape. Our last park is the 583sq.mile spread of the Masai Mara Reserve, famed for the greatest show on earth, the annual Great Migration, when more than a million wildebeest, joined by hundreds of thousands of zebra, make a grand circuit between ‘the Mara’ and neighbouring Serengeti.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Fly to Nairobi

Fly from your chosen airport to Nairobi, and transfer to the Radisson Blu Hotel, centrally positioned in the capital, for an overnight stay.

Day 2 - Travel to Amboseli National Park for a game drive

Travel (4hrs) to Amboseli National Park, for two nights at Tulia Amboseli Safari Camp (2025 - Kilima Safari Camp). Enjoy a first game drive in the park this afternoon, where wetlands, woodlands, savannah, and sulphur springs shape the landscape; and the dry bed of the park’s eponymous lake gave Amboseli its Maasai name, which translates as ‘salty dust’.
(B, L, D)

Day 3 - Enjoy a full day game drive through the park

A full-day game drive in the park, awarded UNESCO status as a Man and Biosphere Reserve, and nicknamed Africa’s Elephant Park. Within its 151sq. miles, two natural springs provide a permanent water supply, acacia trees are the favourite food for giraffes, and the 56 animal species include the Big Five, along with wildebeest and wild dog, hartebeest, hippo, hyena, and herds of Grants gazelle.
(B, L, D)

Day 4 - Travel to Lake Elementaita, with an optional tour to Lake Nakuru

Travel north (6hrs) to Lake Elementaita, arriving for lunch and an afternoon at leisure. With euphorbia woodlands around its shores, it is home to several mammal species, but best known for its prolific birdlife, and as a feeding ground for frothy-pink flocks of flamingos. An optional tour this evening visits nearby Lake Nakuru National Park for a game drive, where waterbuck, white rhino, and endearing warthogs are among the many resident mammal species (pre-bookable). Overnight at the Sentrim Elementaita Lodge, on the lakeshore.
(B, L, D)

Day 5 - Enjoy a boat ride before driving to the Masai Mara National Reserve

Enjoy a relaxing morning boat ride at Lake Naivasha, where you can spot Hippo and numerous Bird species including Kingfisher, Fish Eagle, Herons, Jacanas and more. The lake itself is remarkably picturesque, set against a purple backdrop of the Eburru volcanic mountain range and lined by thick yellow barked Acacia Xanthophlea trees.

Drive through the Great Rift Valley to the Masai Mara National Reserve (4hrs). It’s all in the name at this revered game reserve, ‘Masai’ for the ancestral inhabitants of the area, ‘Mara’ translating from their language as ‘spotted’, a description of the savannah landscape, dotted with bushes, scrub and clusters of trees. An afternoon game drive is your introduction to the world-famous reserve. Two nights at the Pride Inn Mara Camp, by the bank of the River Talek.
(B, L, D)

Day 6 - Explore the reserve on a full day game drive

Enjoy a full day game drive in the Big Five reserve, home to elusive leopards, elephant families, hook-lipped Black Rhinos, herds of buffaloes, and hundreds of the iconic black-mane lions. Separated from the Serengeti by its namesake river, the Masai Mara is at its most awesome during the Great Migration between the two reserves (usually July-September), when a miles-long line of wildebeest and plains game stretches from horizon to horizon on their journey seeking sweeter pastures.
(B, L, D)

Day 7 - Enjoy a morning game drive before transferring to Nairobi for your flight

After a final early morning game drive here in the haunts of the Big Cats, travel (7hrs) to Nairobi. Farewell dinner at the aptly named Carnivore Restaurant, its all-you-can-eat meat buffet, local music, and informal ambiance making it one of East Africa’s most famous and popular venues and the return flight.
(B, D)

Day 8 - Arrive home

Arrival home.

Some travel is on unmade, bumpy roads and it may be necessary to ‘climb’ into the safari vehicle.
