Exploring Pretoria and Johannesburg, taking safaris in Kruger, visiting legendary battlefields, and touring through terrific scenery on the Panorama Route, this African adventure adds the wildlife reserves and cultural character of Zululand and Eswatini

Overview

An immersive experience of every aspect of South Africa, from its culture and heritage to amazing animals and breathtaking landscapes. It begins with the country’s iconic cities, the manicured gardens of Pretoria, the administrative capital, and the landmarks of Nelson Mandela’s life, in and around Johannesburg; and switches from cosmopolitan streets to the country’s first and most famous national park, Kruger, with its wilderness, wide open plains, and wonderful wildlife, including the ‘Big Five’. The journey then takes you off the beaten track, first to the tiny Kingdom of Eswatini, to visit the conservation reserve of Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, and then returning to South Africa for KwaZulu-Natal, witnessing Zulu culture in a community homestead, and cruising on the wide span of Lake Jozini. Haunting history accompanies the last leg of the journey, to skirmish sites and battlefields of the Boer, Zulu, and both World Wars, from the MOTH (Memorable Order of Tin Hats) Hall, to Isandlwana, and Rorke’s Drift, amid the mystical peaks of the Drakensberg (Dragon Mountains).

Highlights

  • The striking Drakensberg Mountains
  • Discover the battlefields history
  •  The ‘Big Five’ in Kruger NP
  • Panorama Route scenic drive
  • Immerse in culture at Eswatini
  • Cruise the wildlife haven Lake Jozini

Itinerary

Day 1 - Fly to Johannesburg

Fly from your chosen airport to Johannesburg.

Day 2 - Transfer to Pretoria and enjoy a city tour

On arrival, transfer to Pretoria, its broad streets lined with thousands of jacaranda trees. En-route to the hotel, view the historic heart of the city, Church Square, with its 19th-century statue of Paul Kruger; the Union Buildings, now best known for Nelson Mandela’s inauguration; and the huge Voortrekker Monument, crowning a hill just south of the city. Stay two nights at the 4-star Court Classique Hotel with a welcome dinner and wine pairing.

Day 3 - Explore Johannesburg and Soweto on a full day tour

A full day tour in and around Johannesburg takes you to Soweto, to visit the Miliary Museum, the Hector Pietersen Memorial of the 1976 uprising, named for its first casualty, a 12-year-old boy; and Nelson Mandela’s House, his humble home until 1962, with memorabilia of his life.
(B, L)

Day 4 - Travel to Kruger National Park on the Panorama Route

Travel to Kruger National Park (8hrs), via the splendidly scenic Panorama Route, focused on the Blyde River Canyon, the third-largest canyon on Earth, plunging 800m to the riverbed. Visits include old-world Pilgrim’s Rest village, founded on gold-panning and now a national monument; the Graskop Gorge Lift, sliding 51m down the side of a cliff into the forested canyon below; and God’s Window, with breathtaking views from its setting high on the Drakensberg escarpment. Continue to Kruger for three nights at the 3-star Nkambeni Tented Lodge.
(B, D)

Day 5 - Spend the day on a game drive through Kruger

Rise early for a fabulous, full-day, open-vehicle game drive in Kruger National Park. One of the largest game reserves on the continent, its reputation goes before it, but nothing prepares you for a first Kruger experience, where habitats range from mountains and cliffs to bush and tropical forest.
(B, L, D)

Day 6 - Relax or join one of our optional excursions

Kruger is home to hundreds of species of mammals and birds, including all of Africa’s Big Five. Enjoy the facilities of the camp in a morning at leisure, or perhaps join optional activities, a game drive (£70; 2025 £75) or bush walk (£80; 2025 £95) (pre-bookable). A game drive is included in the afternoon.
(B, D)

Day 7 - Travel to Eswatini with lunch at a local village

Depart to travel (6hrs) to the Kingdom of Eswatini. Just 200km long by 120 wide, the diminutive kingdom punches far above its weight, with mountains and savannahs, rain forests and river canyons within its landlocked enclave. At the border, visit Matsamo Cultural Village, which celebrates the Swazi culture, crafts and cuisine, and offers performances of traditional singing and dance. Lunch is included in the village, before continuing toward the capital, Mbabane, for a late afternoon arrival and overnight stay at the 4-star Foresters Arms Country Lodge. After check-in, visit the country’s National Museum.
(B, L)

Day 8 - Visit the Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary and a traditional village

Visit the Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, Eswatini’s most popular eco-destination; roamed by zebra, impala, warthog and wildebeest, home to baboons and vervet monkeys, and visited by hippos. Continue to a traditional village to meet the Lady Chief, and enjoy a birdwatching walk, followed by lunch. Cross back to South Africa’s Zululand district (5hrs) along the scenic Lebombo Mountains, for two nights in Mkuze at the 4-star Ghost Mountain Inn.
(B, L, D)

Day 9 - Spend time with a Zulu community and enjoy a game drive

A small town amid haunting scenery, Mkuze nestles between the river of the same name, and the legendary Ghost Mountain, said to hold the historic tombs of local chiefs. Visit a Zulu Cultural Homestead and Community this morning, and, after lunch at the hotel, enter Hluhluwe National Park for a game drive, where a rich variety of wildlife includes the white rhino.
(B, L, D)

Day 10 - Cruise Lake Jozini and continue to Rorke’s Drift

Enjoy a morning cruise on Lake Jozini (aka the Pongolapoort Dam), a man-made structure, encircled by a game reserve, and home to hippos, crocodiles, tiger fish, and abundant birdlife. Continue to Dundee, set in the peaceful Biggarsberg Valley, but best known as a hub of battlefields. Continue for Dundee for a short visit of Talana Museum, on the site of the first battle of the Anglo-Boer war. Drive to Rourke’s Drift for a two nights at the 4-star Fugitive’s Drift Guesthouse and enjoy a‘braai’ (barbecue).
(B, D)

Day 11 - Visit Rorke’s Drift with a specialist guide

Meet a specialist guide at Isandlwana, site of the Anglo-
Zulu War’s opening encounter, and continue to Rorke’s Drift, scene of the dramatic 11hr battle between the British Redcoats and the Zulus, where a small but intriguing museum records the event.
(B, L, D)

Day 12 - Explore Fugitives’ Drift Private Nature Reserve, later continuing to Drakensberg

Take a guided stroll through the Fugitives’ Drift Private Nature Reserve in the early morning. This reserve boasts a rich array of native plants and animals, such as zebra, giraffe, wildebeest, and various types of antelope. Drive towards Cathedral’s Peak Hotel, nestled in the unspoiled surroundings of the Drakensberg mountain range, and enjoy an afternoon gentle hike in the Drakensberg. Overnight at the 4-star Cathedral Peak Hotel.
(B, L, D)

Day 13 - Enjoy leisure time before flying home from Johannesburg

Time at leisure until transfer to Johannesburg airport (5 hrs) for your overnight return flight.
