From the Dead Sea to the Red Sea, via Mount Nebo and Bethany, Jerash, Amman, and Petra, this is a tour of souks and citadels, biblical landmarks and Bedouin landscapes, history and hospitality

Overview

A meandering of Jordan’s natural, religious and ancient landmarks, this fabulous tour begins with a float on the famously buoyant Dead Sea, then makes its way to Mount Nebo, from where Moses viewed the Promised Land; and to Madaba’s mosaic map of ancient Palestine. Beside the River Jordan, where Jesus was baptised, Bethany’s Roman and Byzantine relics include churches, hermit caves and baptism pools; while the grander Greco-Roman ruins of Jerash, with a colonnaded forum and temple, have earned the epithet, “the Pompeii of the East”. Right at the heart of the country’s capital, Amman’s citadel sits atop the highest of the seven hills. Frescoes, mosaics and stone carvings illustrate early Islamic architecture in the imposing ‘Desert Castles’, in sharp contrast to the crusader Kerak Castle. Nothing prepares you for the ‘pink city’ of Petra, praised by J. W. Burgon with the lines, “Match me such a marvel; a rose-red city, half as old as time.” And to round off the tour, opposites attract, from a Bedouin Camp at Wadi Rum to sub-marine splendours off Aqaba’s shore.
