From the mystique and magic of Marrakech to the High Atlas mountain village of Imlil, the walled Berber town of Taroudant, and Essaouira’s Atlantic shore, this tour reveals Morocco’s many facets, and adds absorbing character with stays in historic riads

Overview

An immersive experience of Morocco, this tour puts you at the heart of its history and mystery, colour and culture, by using heritage accommodation, uniquely placed for you to enjoy the atmosphere of its surrounds.

Encapsulating Moroccan tradition, the heart of Marrakech is its UNESCO listed walled city, with 20 gates and 200 towers in its red clay ramparts. The intimate little Angsana Riads are within the medina walls, along with mosques, palaces, 18 souks, and three thousand lanes and alleys leading who-knows-where. In the High Atlas Mountains, Imlil is literally at the end of the road, where tarmac turns to mule tracks, and it echoes the simplicity of its setting with the rustic-style restoration of Dar Imlil riad and the Kasbah du Toubkal mountain retreat. Taroudant’s Riad Dar Zitoune is a colourful and characterful enclave, in an elegant and compact town, where the hub of activity is the traffic-free Place Assarag, where locals promenade and musicians often perform; and in multi-faceted Essaouira, Le Medina adds graceful tradition to its fine location, close to the beach and port, where colour comes in the form of fiery sunsets, and flotillas of bright blue fishing boats.

Highlights

  • Marrakech colourful markets
  • Enjoy Imlil village’s culture
  • Charming Riad Dar Zitoune
  • Essaouira’s sunsets and blue boats
  • Lunch at iconic La Mamounia hotel
  • Scenic High Atlas Mountains

Itinerary

Day 1 - Fly to Marrakech

Fly from London to Marrakech and transfer to the Angsana Riad, within the medina, for a three-night stay.

Day 2 - Relax or join our optional city tour

Experience this dizzying city, where souks are awash with spices, jewellery, and carpets; and mystics and Berber dancers draw the crowds to Djemaa el-Fna square. Use your day in the city for independent exploration, or discover it with an optional Marrakech sightseeing including the beautiful, blue and white Bahia (‘Brilliance’) Palace and the ruins of 16th-century Badia Palace; the restored Saadian Tombs of seven sultans and their 62 relatives; and the Dar Si Said Museum of Moroccan Arts, housed in a 19th-century medina mansion (pre-bookable). Enjoy a riad dinner this evening.
(B, D)

Day 3 - Enjoy independent exploration or an optional YSL Museum tour

Day at leisure or see the more serene side of the city with a visit to the two-acre botanical garden, Jardin Majorelle and the YSL Museum, dedicated to designer Yves Saint Laurent and exhibiting thousands of garments from his collection; and enjoy lunch at the unashamedly opulent former royal palace, now a hotel, La Mamounia (pre-bookable).
(B, L)

Day 4 - Travel to Imlil village

Travel into the High Atlas Mountains, via the scenic Ourika Valley, to Imlil, a little Berber village set 1740 metres above sea level, off the main route from Marrakech to Taroudant, and close to North Africa’s highest peak, Toubkal. Two nights at the Dar Imlil or Kasbah du Toubkal.
(B, L, D)

Day 5 - Enjoy a morning mountain walk

Created to cater for trekkers and mountain tourism, and blessed with fabulous views, Imlil village grew from a hamlet of homes clustered amid orchards and walnut groves. Enjoy the peace and scenery of its surrounds with a 2hr guided walk in the mountains this morning. Lunch at Kasbah du Toubkal. Afternoon at leisure in Imlil.
(B, L, D)

Day 6 - Drive over Tizin’Test pass to Taroudant

A dramatic drive (4hrs) through the High Atlas Mountains takes you over the Tizin’Test pass. At an altitude of 2,092m, it weaves and climbs around the cliffs from Asni, descending the Saharan side of the mountain to the Sousse Valley and the walled town of Taroudant. Two nights at the historic Riad Dar Zitoune.
(B, D)

Day 7 - Visit the gardens and landmarks of Taroudant

Taroudant is a rather majestic fortified market town, hidden in a shell of honey-toned ramparts, with superb souks and two main squares at its core. Visit its gardens and landmarks and take some time to explore the medina today.
(B, D)

Day 8 - Travel to Essaouira

Travel (4hrs) skirting the south of the Atlas range and the Atlantic coast, and perhaps seeing the region’s agile tree-climbing goats, enroute to the busy port and laid-back resort of Essaouira. Two nights at the 4-star Le Medina Hotel.
(B)

Day 9 - Enjoy a walking tour of Essaouira

Enjoy a morning walking tour of this former Portuguese port, visiting the 18th-century oceanfront ramparts, lined with a long row of old brass cannons, the original medina which they were built to protect, and the market. Afternoon at leisure, perhaps to stroll on the crescent bay’s deep sweep of sands, or explore the souk stalls of spices, fabrics, and ceramics.
(B)

Day 10 - Fly home from Marrakech

Transfer to Marrakech airport for the return flight to London.
(B)

Notes:

Days 4-5 involve some uphill walking.

Medinas can be busy and include 1-2 hours on foot.

On occasions, it may be necessary for the group to stay in separate Riads in Marrakech. All Riads are within walking distance of each other.
