This is a tour of wildlife and wonders, from the widest cascade of water on earth, Zimbabwe’s Victoria Falls, including a stay at the iconic eponymous hotel; to the pools, pans, and plains of Botswana’s Okavango Delta, and mahogany forests of Chobe National Park

Overview

This brilliant tour in Zimbabwe and Botswana is bookended by one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, the Victoria Falls, twice as wide and twice as deep as Niagara, where 600 million litres of water per-minute crash over the Zambezi cataract. From here we drive to Botswana’s Chobe National Park. Not the biggest but considered to be one of the best in Africa, the award-winning park, known as “the land of giants”, has the world’s largest population of elephants. The wild and wonderful Okavango Delta is the setting for the Dinare concession, at the edge of Moremi National Park. The first reserve in Africa to be established by local people, to preserve the wildlife in their ancestral lands, this paradise is visited by kingfishers, copper-tailed coucals, hornbills and hamerkops; its land-based animals including hippos and elephant herds, plains game and predatory big cats, and both Black and White rhino. Combining land-based game drives with ‘mokoro’ canoe safaris, and optional helicopter flights, the tour is a tale of two seasons, the lush landscapes of January to May, and the dry May to October, when animals gather at water resources in Chobe and the Delta.

Highlights

  • Traditional ‘mokoro’ canoe safari
  • Sunset cruise on the Chobe River
  • Visit spectacular Victoria Falls
  • Okavango Delta’s wilderness
  • Chobe NP huge elephant herds
  • Optional flight over the falls

Itinerary

Day 1 - Fly indirect to Victoria Falls

Fly overnight from London Heathrow, via Addis Ababa, to Victoria Falls.

Day 2 - Transfer to your accommodation

Transfer on arrival to the 5-star Victoria Falls Hotel, a member of the prestigious ‘Leading Hotels of the World’, and Zimbabwe’s grandest and oldest luxury hotel, gazing out from its gardens to the spray cloud from the Zambezi River’s 110m high cataract, forming the fantastic Victoria Falls. Two-night stay.

Day 3 - Enjoy a guided walk of the Falls and a sunset cruise

More evocatively known as Mosi-oa-Tunya, ‘the smoke that thunders’, the Falls’ constant spray creates a thriving rainforest, which is buzzing with birds, insects, and small mammals. With a morning guided walk of the Falls and a sunset Zambezi River cruise, there is also a bird’s-eye-view option of a helicopter flight (12 minutes, pre-bookable).

Day 4 - Travel to Kansane

Transfer to Kasane, at the north-eastern edge of Chobe, Botswana’s first National Park; famed as one of Africa’s great wildlife parks for its concentration of game and unrivalled population of elephants. Three nights at Chobe Safari Lodge, within 150m of the Chobe River.

Day 5 - Explore the park on a game drive and river cruise

Spread around the riverbanks, the park’s floodplains and mahogany forests are home to impala, giraffe, zebra herds, majestic kudu, and 450 species of birds. An early morning game drive is followed by an afternoon river cruise.

Day 8 - Enjoy a traditional canoe excursion and afternoon game drive

Take to the region’s ‘mokoro’ traditional canoes, where your guide propels the craft through the channels with a long ‘nkashi’ pole, for early morning game and birdlife viewing from the channels of the delta (replaced by land-based safari if water levels are low); and enjoy an afternoon game drive.
