This ‘Great Canal Journey’ is a fabulous float on the Marne-Rhine canal, sailing through sylvan valleys and the Vosges Mountains, to picturesque villages, fairy-tale castles, chateau views, and Chagall glass, enroute from splendid Strasbourg to lovely little Lagarde

Overview

With Prunella Scales and Timothy West at the helm, the ‘Great Canal Journeys’ TV series showcased the scenery and serenity of the Marne-Rhine canal; and inspired us to create a barge cruise through the rural heart of Alsace. Taking to the water with a maximum of twenty guests, the MS Péniche Madeleine boasts air-conditioned cabins, an elegant dining room, lounge bar, sun deck and terrace, with bicycles for guests’ use when the vessel is moored. As relaxing and refreshing as the landscape it traverses, the barge begins its travels in charismatic Strasbourg, where a small boat cruise lets you see the city by night. Between here and journey’s end, land-based highlights include dinner ashore in canal-side Waltenheim, sightseeing amid the half-timbered houses of Saverne and the nearby Chateau Haut Barr, and climbing the hill to Lutzelbourg’s castle in the Zorn Valley. From here, the canal itself is the star as the barge navigates two tunnels, the unique and ingenious Arzviller Inclined Plane boat lift, replacing a series of 17 locks, and the huge Réchicourt lock; then sails through the lakes to Sarrebourg, to view Chagall’s stained-glass windows, before a gala dinner in its final mooring at charming Lagarde.

Highlights

  • Small vessel cruising
  • Wander through Strasbourg
  • Explore Château du Haut Barr
  • Discover medieval Saverne

Day 3 - Cruise to Saverne and visit the Château du Haut Barr

Passing the pretty villages of Hochfelden and Schwindratzheim, cruise to Saverne, lining the canal in magnificent style with its Château des Rohan, for an afternoon visit to the medieval castle / Château du Haut Barr, built across three broad rocks, linked by stairways and the ‘Devil’s Bridge’ footbridge, 460m above the Zorn Valley floor. With spectacular panoramic views over the plains and waterway, it is known as ‘The Eye of Alsace’. Return to the town, with free time for exploration. Dinner this evening at a local restaurant, where the ‘tarte flambée’ is a speciality.

Day 4 - Explore Saverne before visiting Lutzelbourg

Morning sightseeing in Saverne, includes the Notre Dame Cathedral with its 12th century steeple, 14th century Récollets Monastery, and Katz House on the characterful Grand Rue, where a unicorn statue celebrates the town’s medieval legends of the magical, mythical animal. Cruise through the scenic Vosges Mountains to Lutzelbourg, cut through by the canal and framed within four hills. Crowning one of these, the little town’s 11th century castle stands sentinel, 980m above sea level. We visit it on foot this afternoon (a steep walk, taking approx. 30 minutes).

Day 5 - Enjoy the Arzviller Inclined Plane elevator

This morning’s short but eventful journey takes the subterranean route through the 475m Niderviller and the 2.3km Arzviller tunnels, and includes the unforgettable experience of the Arzviller Inclined Plane elevator, a feat of engineering which functions according to the Archimedes principle of buoyancy.
