A veritable feast of Greek and Roman monuments vie for attention amid the Norman, Phoenician and Saracen landmarks of Sicily’s cultural heritage. The island’s astonishing wealth of well-preserved sites bring the ancient past to life and make this our top tour in Italy

Overview

A circular tour of Sicily’s sumptuous treasures begins, rather aptly, at Syracuse, where Archimedes had his ‘Eureka’ moment, and Greek, Roman and Baroque buildings chart the ancient city’s history. A duo of UNESCO World Heritage sites come next as we travel inland to the exquisite Roman mosaics of Piazza Armerina’s Villa del Casale, then continue to Agrigento’s Greek ‘Valley of Temples’. In a stunning setting overlooking the sea, Selinunte’s archaeological park is isolated, elevated and enormous, with the ruins of residential buildings, city walls and tall temples evoking its 2,500-year-old origins.

In Palermo’s 12th century Norman churches, the cathedral nave is a flamboyant fusion of eras and art, while the crypt holds the tombs of emperors; La Martorana (church of Santa Maria dell’Ammiraglio) gleams with gilded mosaics; and a litany of saints are celebrated in the mesmerising Palatine Chapel. Its Duomo revered as an architectural masterpiece, Monreale is not so much a town with a cathedral, more a cathedral with a town; while coastal Cefalú displays a dual personality of modern shoreline and medieval heart. Some say we saved the best for last on the final day, as we team enchanting Taormina with iconic Mount Etna.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Fly to Catania, and enjoy a welcome aperitif

Fly to Catania and transfer to the 4-star Hotel Principe for a 2-night stay. The hotel is centrally located and surrounded by a good choice of restaurants. Welcome aperitif.

Day 2 - Enjoy a tour of Catania before continuing to Syracuse

After a short walking tour of Catania, travel south to Syracuse on the Ortigia peninsula. Once ranked amongst Greek cities as second only to Athens, it is home to a Roman amphitheatre and Greek theatre, Arethusa’s Fountain and Dionysius’ Ear, and a Baroque cathedral on the site of the Temple of Minerva, with ancient temple columns re-utilised in its walls.
(B)

Day 3 - Visit the Piazza Armerina before touring the Valley of Temples

Journey into Sicily’s central mountains to visit the 3rd/4th century AD Villa del Casale at Piazza Armerina, with its matchless mosaics of mundane and mythological life; revealing one of the richest and largest collections of Roman mosaics in the world. Continue to the southwestern shore for a guided tour of Agrigento’s (Greek) Valley of Temples. Overnight at the 4-star Hotel Colleverde Park.
(B)

Day 4 - Enjoy sightseeing at Selinunte and a wine tasting, ending in Palermo

Roads, temples, fortified walls and the remains of an acropolis are in your seafront sights at Selinunte, the westernmost of ancient Greek cities. We follow this with a wine tasting visit to Marsala, before travelling to the charming coastal town of Mondello (Palermo) for two nights at the 4-star Splendid Hotel La Torre.
(B)

Day 5 - Spend the day exploring the sights of Palermo

A day of discovery in Palermo takes you to the awe-inspiring Norman Byzantine churches, from the crypt and the carved stone columns of the mighty Cathedral to the biblical old-gold mosaics in La Martorana church. A visit to Monreale, its Gothic cathedral aglow with an astounding 6,000sq.m of Byzantine mosaics. Conclude the day with a Palazzo visit.
(B)

Day 6 - Visit the Palatine chapel before continuing to Cefalu

Begin the day with a visit to the Palatine chapel of the Norman Palace, where barely an inch of wall or ceiling is left unadorned. Continue to Cefalú, whose Norman cathedral and cloisters dominate the medieval town. Two nights at 4-star Hotel Villa Sonia in Castelmola.
(B)

Day 7 - Enjoy a visit to Mount Etna with the afternoon in Taormina

This morning, visit the island’s most famous and formidable landmark, and Europe’s highest and most active volcano, Mount Etna, climbing the 1,900m to the Rifugio Sapienza by bus (or, at an extra charge reaching 2,920m by cable-car or 4-wheel drive). The afternoon in Taormina lets you stroll its medieval lanes, pause for panoramic views from its Greco-Roman theatre, and sample a Sicilian aperitif and appetisers.
(B)

Day 8 - Travel to Catania and fly home

Transfer to Catania for the return flight.

Notes:

This is a busy and full itinerary and entails morning departures and late evening arrivals at hotels. Sightseeing involves many visits on foot and uneven surfaces.

Due to traffic controlled areas in Sicily, bus/coach may not be able to drop off or pick up as close to site entrances or hotels (in this case you may need to take your luggage up to the hotel).
