The administrative capital is Podgorica. It lays no claim to beauty, but monuments mark its past and present; from the historic Stone Bridge and modern Millennium Bridge, over the Moraca and Ribnica Rivers, to a Turkish clock tower, Soviet structures from its time as Titograd, and many war memorials.

In sharp contrast, the cultural capital is Cetinj, an elegant enclave of eclectic Italianate and neo-Baroque architecture. Two of its royal palaces are now museums, celebrating the lives of their former residents, the country’s last king, Niloa, and the 19th-century ruler, prince-bishop, and saint, Petar II.

Coastal towns and settlements include Kotor, on its eponymous, UNESCO listed fjord, where the Cathedral of St. Tryphon is the focus of a medieval Old Town; and the pretty village of nearby Perast, with the frescoed church of Our Lady of the Rocks on its islet, just across the water.

The resort town of Petrovac backs a half-moon bay with a pebble beach, a little harbour, waterfront cafés, and herb-scented headlands; while historic Ulcinj is surrounded by fortress walls, climbing the cliffs from the sea, and enclosing a mesmerising maze of lanes and stairways.

Nature’s wonders cover national parks and dramatic gorges. The Biogradska Gora biosphere reserve hems its namesake lake with ancient rainforest; and Durmitor is a UNESCO protected park, with wolves and wild cats, limestone peaks, river canyons and a glacial lake.

Super-scenic Lake Skadar is the largest body of water in the Balkans, visited by abundant birdlife and decorated with spreads of waterlilies; and the Tara River Canyon boasts Europe’s deepest gorges, crossed by the Djurdjevica Tara Bridge for terrific views.

And among Montenegro’s historic monuments are the towers and turrets of Stari Bar citadel, in their Rumija Mountain setting; Ostrog Monastery, a place of pilgrimage, cut into caves in a sheer cliff-face, 900m above a valley; and the medieval Moraca Monastery, with its beautiful Byzantine frescoes.

When to go on Montenegro holidays

Montenegro’s climate progresses from Mediterranean on the coast to continental inland and in mountain ranges. In general, there is a long rainy season from October to April, when rain is not frequent but can be torrential; April, May and October temperatures hover between 20 and 24°, while summers are hot and sunny, with sea breezes on the coast, and a daytime average of 31°; rising to 34° in low-lying inland areas, and dropping to an average of 26° at higher altitudes.
