Escorted Tours to Honduras

Making significant strides to repair its reputation of poverty, crime and political conflict; Honduras rewards its visitors with majestic forested mountains, 400 miles of Caribbean coast, mystical Mayan relics and a Spanish colonial culture.

Why choose a tour in Honduras?

The second largest country in South America, and the least visited, Honduras is a developing nation, and the signs are that its renaissance is underway.

Its national parks, protected forests, and wildlife sanctuaries bring the country’s beautiful nature to the fore; its capital, Tegucigalpa, was founded in the 16th century and is famed for its feast of Spanish colonial buildings; but it is the many Mayan relics which are the magnet for most travellers.

Of these, Copán is the most important in Honduras and among the most magnificent sites of the subcontinent’s Mayan civilisation. In a lush valley, close the Guatemalan border, the UNESCO listed archaeological area holds the ruins of a once great city, home to 25,000 people. Within its hundred-hectare spread are altars and stelae, tombs, tunnels and temples, pyramids and public squares, and the matchless Plaza of the Hieroglyphic Staircase, its 10m-wide steps inscribed with 1,250 individual carvings.

After 400 years of inhabitation, the city was abandoned in the 9th century AD, gradually swallowed by jungle greenery, and remained undiscovered until 1570. Today, it is dubbed ‘the Paris of the Mayan world’ for its astonishing monuments, and its only residents are wildlife and birdlife, from monkeys to sloths and macaws.

When to go on Honduras holidays

The country’s tropical climate is hot at low altitudes, cool in the hills, and cold in the mountains. In northern areas close to the coast, rain showers and thunderstorms can be expected throughout the year.
Jules Verne’s visits to Honduras are between November and February, the most comfortable months for touring, when daytime temperatures are about 28° in the northeastern region.

Intertwining the mystery of Mayan culture with the mastery of structure and creative adornment, the sites of ancient Honduras make an awe-inspiring experience for those with an enthusiasm for art, history, archaeology, and the humanities, and an eye-opening interlude for the simply curious.
