Get to know Lake Garda on this carefully curated adventure for solo travellers that features group wine-tasting sessions, scenic boat trips and guided excursions to medieval lakeside towns, as well as free days to relax and explore Italy’s largest lake independently

Overview

The north-shore town of Torbole is your base for the week, where you’ll check into a chic hotel and bond with your fellow travellers over a welcome meal. Throughout the trip, you’ll join group excursions led by a guide, who’ll introduce you to Lake Garda’s history, culture and landscapes. A tour of UNESCO-listed Verona, famed for its Shakespearean heritage and romantic architecture, is a highlight.
Savour scenic bus rides along the lake’s shoreline, stopping to roam historic towns like Sirmione and Malcesine that cling to cliffsides, guarded by turreted castles and imposing walls. You’ll wander the labyrinthine streets of old towns once ruled by Italian lords and inhabited by artists and writers drawn here by the lake’s beauty.
Sail across to Limone, where locals grow fruit in famous lemon houses and produce oil from terraced olive groves that line the hillside. You’ll learn about the region’s viticulture with group visits to Valpolicella to sample red wines and a vineyard in Lugana, which produces some of Italy’s best white whites. A visit to the South Tyrol capital, Bolzano, ends with a fiery grappa tasting at a distillery.
You’ll also have two free days at your leisure, lounging by the hotel pool or on one of Torbole’s beaches, where you can watch windsurfers skim the water’s surface. Feast on decadent Italian dishes at waterfront restaurants, sip coffee in atmospheric piazzas, or get your blood pumping with hiking and biking adventures in the surrounding hills.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Fly to Verona and head to Torbole

Fly to Verona and transfer to Torbole, a serene town on the northern shores of Lake Garda. You’ll check into the 4-star Hotel Caravel, which has balconies with mountain views. This will be your base for the next seven nights, so you can unpack and unwind. After settling in, have dinner at the hotel with your group and get to know each other.

Day 2 - Explore Lake Garda and sample Lugana wine

After breakfast, set off on a full-day excursion around Lake Garda. Your guide will tell you about the history of Garda, Italy’s biggest and most-visited lake, as you travel down its east coast. Your first stop is in Lazise, a medieval town where you can wander through maze-like alleys surrounded by ancient walls. Continue to Sirmione, which sits on a finger-like peninsula at the southern end of the lake. In your free time maybe visit Rocca Scaligera, a 13th-century castle surrounded by water, where you can climb towers for panoramic lake vistas. The castle, built by the prestigious Scaligeri family of Verona, guards the entrance to Sirmione’s old town, where you’ll find cobbled streets, Roman remnants, and thermal baths. Afterwards, you’ll visit a wine cellar to try Italy’s coveted Lugana white wines on your way back to Torbole, where the evening is yours to relax.

Day 3 - Visit Riva del Garda, Limone & Malcesine by bus and boat

This morning, head out to visit more of Lake Garda’s historic towns. First, you’ll travel by coach to Riva del Garda, which dates back to Roman times and was later ruled by the Scaligeris and then the Serenissima Republic of Venice. Enter the old town and admire its 12th-century fortress, now home to a museum. Next, take a boat journey across the lake to Limone. As you approach, take in views of the hills lined with olive groves and the town’s colourful houses, which tumble down to the water’s edge. Disembark to discover Limone’s flower-filled streets and famous lemon houses, where locals have grown citrus fruit for generations. Sail back across the water to Malcesine, a former fishing village at the foot of Mount Baldo that has attracted artists and writers for centuries and is marked by a formidable castle. After exploring, you’ll return to Torbole by coach for a free evening.

Day 4 - Free day in Torbole

Today is yours to spend as you please. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast and then venture out to explore Torbole independently. Stroll along the shoreline and through the town’s narrow streets, filled with terracotta-roofed buildings and peaceful piazzas. Along the way, stop for a cappuccino or some rich Italian food in one of the lakeside eateries. If you’re feeling active, hire a bike from the hotel to traverse the town’s stellar cycling trails, which follow the promenade, leading to surrounding villages. Alternatively, head down to Torbole Beach, where you can watch kitesurfers and windsurfers zip across the water or even join them for a lesson.

Day 5 - Visit Verona and go wine tasting in Valpolicella

Your day begins with a drive to UNESCO-listed Verona, where Shakespeare set his tragic love story, Romeo and Juliet. Bisected by the River Adige, the city is home to a blend of architecture that includes grand churches, a 1st-century amphitheatre that hosts an annual opera festival and the buzzing Piazza delle Erbe, which combines Roman, medieval and Renaissance architecture. In your free time visit sites such as Juliet’s balcony and the Gothic tombs of the Scaligeri family. After exploring Verona, you’ll continue to Valpolicella in the heart of the province, renowned for its red wines. Learn about the region’s unique viticulture traditions at a vineyard where you’ll taste a selection of rich wines before returning to your hotel.

Day 6 - Discover Bolzano and taste local grappa

After breakfast, travel north to Bolzano, the capital of South Tyrol. The city is known as the gateway to the Dolomites and is surrounded by vineyards. Founded in the 15th century as a Roman military station, Bolzano was later invaded by various groups, from the Visigoths to the Normans and the Counts of Tyrol, and is now a leafy city home to elegant townhouses, riverside paths and markets.  Explore Bolzano independently; stroll down lively Via dei Portici or ride one of the city’s cable cars to nearby peaks. Don’t miss the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology, where you’ll see the Neolithic mummy, Ötzi the Iceman, who was discovered in the Ötzaler Alps in 1991, perfectly preserved in glacial ice. On the way back to Torbole, you’ll stop at one of the biggest distilleries in the Trentino region to taste grappa.
(B)

Day 7 - Free day to relax or explore the Torbole area

Spend your last full day on Lake Garda relaxing or visiting neighbouring villages by bus, bike or ferry. For sweeping lake views, hike or catch the local bus up to the hamlet of Nago, which sits 200 metres above sea level. From here, visit The Giants’ Pots, a collection of glacial potholes in a dramatic river canyon, which date back to the 4th and 3rd millennium. For more exercise, hiking and biking trails await at Busatte Adventure Park or you can do some cultural sightseeing with trips to the nearby 11th-century San Colombano Hermitage or the hilltop Beseno Castle. Finally, unwind on Torbole Beach and relish a final lakeside meal to end your day.

Day 8 - Depart Verona for your international flight

Today your Lake Garda adventure comes to an end. After breakfast, enjoy free time until your transfer to Verona Airport in time for your homebound flight.
