Combine a relaxing few days on the shores of Lake Garda with cultural explorations in Verona and Venice on this laid-back, week-long trip around Northern Italy

Overview

Set on the southwestern shore of Lake Garda, the picture-book town of Moniga del Garda makes for an idyllic base from which to explore the region’s highlights. You’ll stay here for four nights, enjoying guided tours of the surrounding towns and villages, alongside days at leisure to explore at your own pace.

Visit Isola del Garda, the lake’s largest island, perched above a sweep of blue and famous for its elaborate Venetian villa. Take in the lemon groves and cobbled lanes of Limone, then stroll between the medieval castle walls of Malcesine and Lazise. Sample the region’s famous Chiaretto rosé, and choose to kick back on a beach or hop between the lake’s myriad of other quaint, cobblestone treasures.

After you’ve had your fill of snow-capped mountain views and glistening water, you’ll travel to Verona, the land of Romeo and Juliet. Here palatial remnants of the once-ruling Scaligeri family sit beside well-preserved Roman ruins, with atmospheric lanes leading to fountain-topped piazzas. Visit the Casa di Giulietta to gaze up at Juliet’s iconic balcony, and take in 2,000 years of history as you wander its Unesco-listed streets.

End your trip with two days to take in Venice and the surrounding region. Visit the legendary St Mark’s Square and its basilica, glide along postcard-pretty canals and take in the city’s myriad islands as you round off a memorable, culture-filled week.

Embark on a full-day tour around the highlights of Lake Garda today. You’ll start in the town of Limone, exploring its flower-bedecked lakeside promenade and fragrant lemon groves. Wander its cobbled streets, lined with colourful houses and cafes, and stroll along the port to take in sweeping mountain views. Enjoy some free time, before catching the boat to your next stop, Malcesine. Marked out by its 13th-century castle, this medieval town has been carefully preserved, with narrow, winding lanes set beside a lively harbour area. From there it’s on to Lazise, one of the oldest towns on the lake, boasting its own medieval walls and towers, alongside a vibrant waterfront lined with cafes and restaurants.

Day 4 - Explore the area at leisure

Today is free to enjoy in your own way. Glimpse the Casa di Giulietta, home to Juliet’s famous balcony; the Scaliger Arches, housing the intricate tombs of the 14th-century ruling Scaligeri family; and the Arena di Verona, a Roman amphitheatre. Check out its labyrinth of narrow streets, framed by opulent palaces, and explore its myriad squares; don’t miss Piazza dei Signori, one of the most beautiful in the city.
