A superb short break in Cairo takes you to Egypt’s most iconic monuments, the Pyramids of Giza, a tour to ancient Memphis and Saqqara, and visits the hallowed halls of the Egyptian Museum and the impressive newly opened Grand Egyptian Museum

Overview

Cairo often serves as the portal to the country’s antiquity, an eye-opening introduction for first-time visitors to the country. Home to one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Pyramid of Cheops; the magnificent, much-photographed monolith of the Sphinx; and the treasures of Tutankhamun’s tomb in the city’s world-renowned Egyptian Museum and a visit to the long-awaited and incredible Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), that recently launched a soft-opening with access to 12 galleries, waiting to be explored! This initial enthralling experience whets the appetite for many travellers, who return for more in-depth discovery of the city, its surrounds, and sites along the Nile. Jules Verne’s ‘Gems of Cairo’ lives up to its title with intriguing sites. Accompanied by knowledgeable local guides, included tours visit the pyramids; reveal the myths and mysteries of Memphis and Saqqara; give you a morning among the rich mix of the museum’s exhibits; and view the city from the Nile in a refreshing interlude on a white-sailed felucca. Leisure time is built-in for independent exploration, perhaps to haggle at the colourful stalls of the Khan El-Khalili Souk; and an optional excursion introduces you to old-world streets in ‘Coptic Cairo’.
