A wealth of history, ancient archaeology and pretty villages, Tunisia’s little landmass has seven UNESCO sites, from the ruins of Roman Africa to medieval medinas and the domes of Kairouan

Overview

Shaped by Phoenician, Carthaginian, Roman, Byzantine and Berber influences, Tunisia spans centuries with fascinating relics of its past. The ruins of Roman Carthage are the third city to be built on the site; Dougga covers a 65-hectare hilltop with superbly preserved remains of a Roman town; Kerkouane reveals a Phoenician-Punic way of life; and El Djem is a hugely impressive, oval-shaped amphitheatre. Interspersed with these, we visit the beautiful town of Sidi Bou Said; Tabarka, its cobbled pavements and scents of shisha epitomising authentic Tunisia; Bulla Regia’s underground Roman villas; and the still inhabited troglodyte town of Matmata. Hammamet’s low-rise buildings are ‘never taller than a tree’; and Tozeur, an oasis city, is a charming and disarming place, and the launch pad for an optional 4x4 excursion to the Star Wars landscape of the Sahara sand dunes.

Highlights

  • Bardo Museum in Tunis
  • Ancient Punic city of Kerkouane
  • Sahara & Salt Lake Chott el Djerid
  • UNESCO Site: ‘Holy’ Kairouan
