Highlights of Vietnam and Cambodia

Exploring Vietnam’s greatest cities, north and south, this varied tour begins among the many temples of the capital, historic Hanoi; crosses into Cambodia for the world’s largest religious complex, Angkor; and returns to Ho Chi Minh City, the phoenix of old Saigon

Focused on the most famous monuments of the region, and flying between the three destinations, this tour allows ample time in each to absorb the atmosphere, enjoy the differences, and explore the details of their iconic sites. Straddling the Red River and circling two dozen lakes, Hanoi is as charismatic as it is ancient. With its roots dating back a thousand years, a strong sense of etiquette and tradition, a cluster of pagodas intermingled with colonial elegance, and the ’36 streets’ of the Old Quarter adding bags of character; the city’s social centre is Hoan Kiem Lake, a sunrise spot for Tai Chi sessions. Siem Reap sits on the Tonle Sap lakeshore, with glimpses of the old Khmer village amid its current resort persona of chic shops and excellent restaurants; but its big attraction is outside the town, in the UNESCO site of Angkor, its temples laced with intricately carved stonework, uninhabited for six centuries, undiscovered until the late 1800s, yet still steeped in haunting mythology. An almost unimaginable transformation sees Vietnam’s largest metropolis, Ho Chi Minh City, rise as a proud amalgam of past and present; an exciting, intriguing collage of tall towers and riverside stilt-houses, chic boutiques and smoky temples.
